Safety

Winter Weather

Mid-Atlantic winters can bring cold temperatures, snow, ice, and wind. Please use caution when driving the trail route as the weather often creates poor driving conditions in the area. In cold temperatures, walk carefully on sidewalks and pavement as the surfaces may become icy and slippery.

Summer Weather

Summers in the Mid-Atlantic are hot and humid. This weather increases the risk of sunburn and heat stroke. Use sunscreen, wear light clothing, and drink plenty of water. We also recommend checking for ticks after spending time outdoors and wearing bug spray to avoid fly and mosquito bites. If you hear thunder or see lightning, take shelter inside.

Water Safety

If you plan on enjoying the water portions of the trail, make sure you follow proper water safety. Check your water craft to ensure it is in good condition to use and wear a United States Coast Guard approved, properly-sized life jacket at all times. Follow proper etiquette and rules for safe boating. The waterways are a great way to discover the region's history and natural beauty when done safely.

For tips and instructions on safe boating, please consult the National Safe Boating Council's
website.
