This interactive trunk has been designed to both increase your students' content knowledge about the War of 1812 in Havre de Grace, Maryland and exercise social studies literacy and critical thinking skills. The trunk contains reproduction objects, primary source documents, images, and audiovisual materials for your students to investigate, each of which is incorporated into at least one instructional seed to help inspire and guide your instruction. In addition, the Teacher's Guide includes two full lessons based on primary sources.

Together, these resources illuminate the causes, course, and consequences of the Chesapeake campaign of 1813-1814 during the War of 1812, with a particular focus on the experiences of Havre de Grace, Maryland. By exploring the circumstances and happenings in Havre de Grace in detail, students will be introduced to themes that are important to understanding the broader conflict, including the relative strengths of the British and American forces, the development of American nationalism and patriotism, and the effect of the war on American civilians. Students will derive the fullest benefit from the use of the trunk if they have are already familiar with the causes and outcomes of the American Revolution and the causes of the War of 1812, as well as the basic relationship of the War of 1812 to the Napoleonic wars between Great Britain and France.
