Stones River National Battlefield holds an artillery encampment and battery firing programs on Saturday and Sunday, July 19-20, 2014. Cannons and crews from several states will assemble on the battlefield to tell the story of the artillery at the Battle of Stones River and demonstrate the firing of Civil War cannon. The physical and psychological impact of artillery played a critical role in the Union victory at Stones River. Union artillery batteries stopped Confederate attacks at the most crucial moments of the fight.
The big guns will fire near the visitor center each day at 11 AM, 1 and 3 PM each day. Each program will feature the the story of Confederate soldiers who faced the Union guns during the Battle of Stones River.
Visitors will get a chance to try their hand at artillery drill at 11:30 and 1:30 each day as the soldiers take them to the guns for intense instruction in the art of firing a cannon. At 2 PM, the artificers will share their role in keeping the cannons in fighting trim. The battery camp will be open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to join the soldiers and civilians and ask them questions about life on and off the battlefield.

2 PM - An Artificers Work is Never Done - Visitors will gather at the battery wagon in camp and learn about the men who worked round the clock to keep the cannons ready to fight.
3 PM - Artillery Firing Demonstration
