Stones River National Battlefield holds an artillery encampment and battery firing programs on Saturday and Sunday, July 18-19, 2015. Cannons and crews from several states will assemble on the battlefield to tell the story of the artillery at the Battle of Stones River and demonstrate the firing of Civil War cannon. The physical and psychological impact of artillery played a critical role in the Union victory at Stones River. Union artillery batteries stopped Confederate attacks at the most crucial moments of the fight.
All of the big guns will fire near the visitor center each day at 11 AM, 1 and 3 PM each day. Each program will feature the the story of the inexperienced soldiers of the Chicago Board of Trade Battery and their experiences during two of the most critical phases in the Battle of Stones River.
Visitors will get a chance to try their hand at artillery drill at 11:30 AM, 1:30 & 3:30 PM each day as the soldiers take them to the guns for intense instruction in the art of firing a cannon.
The battery camp will be open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to join the soldiers and civilians and ask them questions about life on and off the battlefield. Young visitors can earn a one of our Civil War to Civil Rights trading cards at each camp activity.
Daily Program Schedule
9 AM - Camp Open to the Public
10 AM - Battery Drill - Get a close-up look at artillery drill as the battery prepares itself for the days firings.
11 AM - Battery Firing Demonstration
11:30 AM - Load, Ready, Fire! - Visitors will get a chance to try their hand at the drill for loading and firing a cannon and test their skills against one of the battery's detachments. Program will include a firing demonstration by one cannon.
1 PM - Battery Firing Demonstration
