Geology Shapes the Battle

Karst Topography

This geologic feature formed when the soft, porous limestone slowly dissolved away due to exposure to air and water. Caves, sinkholes, springs, and limestone outcroppings are all common in the karst topography of middle Tennessee. These formations provided temporary shelter for Union troops and hindered the Confederate advance through this area.
