Canadian National 3254, a steam locomotive built in 1917, rolls under one of the historic DL&W signal bridges still standing on the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad main line between Scranton and Delaware Water Gap.

Steamtown NHS will offer a 104-mile roundtrip excursion to the Delaware Water Gap for the "Founders Day" celebration on June 26. On the "Founders Day" excursion, this all-day trip crosses the beautiful Pocono Plateau, through a tunnel, along creeks and rivers, past lakes and ponds, and through East Stroudsburg on its way to the historic town of Delaware Water Gap. The town has planned station tours, displays and special events.

Departs Steamtown at 9:00 am and returns at approximately 5:30 pm. Reservations open April 12, 2010.

NOTE: This is the only Delaware Water Gap excursion planned for 2010.

A ring of flame envelopes a steam locomotive drive wheel as a tire is heated so it can be placed on the wheel.

Did You Know?
Though made of steel, the tires on a steam locomotive wear out. A new tire is cut slightly too small and then it is heated until it expands. After workers slide it onto the wheel, the tire shrinks as it cools and is locked into place. Learn more about steam locomotive maintenance at Steamtown NHS.
