The Education Development Team at Steamtown National Historic Site has revised our elementary education programs in order to better connect students to the mission and stories of the National Park Service and our Park. The programs assist Pennsylvania educators in meeting curriculum requirements of the PA Department of Education standards. All curriculum-based programs require direct teacher and chaperone involvement.

We offer three new curriculum-based programs for Pennsylvania teachers - all other school groups will be scheduled as Field Trips.

FIELD TRIPS

ALL GROUPS REQUIRE ADVANCE RESERVATIONS

A ring of flame envelopes a steam locomotive drive wheel as a tire is heated so it can be placed on the wheel.

Did You Know?
Though made of steel, the tires on a steam locomotive wear out. A new tire is cut slightly too small and then it is heated until it expands. After workers slide it onto the wheel, the tire shrinks as it cools and is locked into place. Learn more about steam locomotive maintenance at Steamtown NHS.
