Newly-elected Sen. Kennedy, with other Massachusetts leaders and legislators, challenged Sec. of Defense Robert McNamara's 1964 decision to close Springfield Armory by 1968. Sen. Kennedy also wrote much of the establishing legislation and rationale that created Springfield Armory National Historic Site in the early 1970s.
