image from a 1787 political cartoon

Taken from "THE LOOKING GLASS FOR 1787", Library of Congress

The year 1787 was a time of violent speech and action. The year began with grave fears of national dissolution and ended in the creation of the constitution for a strengthened United States. The cartoon that this image was taken from illustrated the national preoccupation with its future in the balance.
