Port Oneida Rural Historic District Environmental Assessment Update

The Port Oneida Rural Historic District Environmental Assessment was made available for public comment from September 17 to October 19, 2007.  This document describes and analyzes alternative locations for a visitor contact station and employee housing, alternative means of improving visitor access, and ways to interpret Port Oneida resources.  We thank all of those who provided valuable input into this process.

The comments are currently being analyzed and we expect to make a decision on the selected alternative sometime this winter.  Once the selection is made, a Finding of No Significance Impact (the decision document), will be made available on a link to this website.

The environmental assessment may be reviewed by clicking on the following link: Port Oneida EA, but no comments may be made at this time.

South Manitou Island Lighthouse

Did You Know?
The lighthouse on South Manitou Island (Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore) was commissioned in 1872 and served Lake Michigan Shipping for over 100 years. You can take a tour of the lighthouse and climb its 117 step circular stairway to a great view of the Manitou Passage.
