The National Park Service (NPS) will burn debris piles this winter at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore). Over 40 debris piles were produced as a result of historic landscape restoration and invasive tree management projects within the Port Oneida Rural Historic District.

Winner of Kids’ Centennial Artwork Contest
A color drawing produced by Chloe Jerva, a 6th Grader from Glen Lake Community Schools in Maple City, Michigan, was selected as the winner of the Centennial Artwork Contest. Chloe’s drawing depicts a bear sitting on a dune looking out over Lake Michigan.

National Lakeshore Reopens Portions of the Alligator Hill Trail
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) will reopen portions of the Alligator Hill Trail on Thursday, November 19, 2015. The trail has been impassable since a severe storm blew down thousands of trees on August 2, 2015. National Park Service crews and National Lakeshore volunteers have completed work on the Easy Loop, Advanced Loop, Islands Lookout, and Big Glen Lookout. Over 2,800 trees have been cleared on six miles of trail. Clearing of approximately 1,000 more trees from the two-mile Intermediate Loop and trail access from Forest Haven Drive will take place in the spring of 2016.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) has started clearing the Alligator Hill Trail. The trail has been impassable since August 2, 2015, when a severe storm caused extensive tree damage.

After careful consideration, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) will increase entrance and camping fees beginning January 1, 2016 in order to fund important maintenance and visitor service projects within the park and comply with a nationwide review of national park entrance fees.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Addresses Concerns about Storm Impacted Areas
On August 2, 2015, the massive storm that swept through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) caused substantial blowdown of the park’s trees. The National Lakeshore’s initial storm recovery priority was to reopen heavily used visitor areas such as the D. H. Day Campground, Glen Haven Historic District, and the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. The National Park Service (NPS) is now planning its response to wildland fire fuel loading associated with the storm.

Ms. Frizzell loves all things water, and her work explores her fascination with trying to make sense of the seeming chaos of waves and reflections for the patterns that exist underneath.

National Lakeshore Presents September Artist-In-Residence Program
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) welcomes their September Artist-In-Residence (AIR) for 2015; Cara O’Brien, a Michigan artist currently working and living in Whitehall, Michigan. Ms. O’Brien’s work explores the possibilities of high fire porcelain clay, driftwood, aged metal, and other objects. Her mixed media works are constructed from numerous individual porcelain components combined with altered wood or metal. Through the process of creating these wall sculptures, she transforms the handmade and wood and metal into something that suggests growth, change, and life from decay. Ms. O’Brien will offer a free workshop on Saturday, September 12 at 2:00 pm at the Dechow Farm in Port Oneida.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will celebrate the 99th birthday of the National Park Service by offering free admission on Tuesday, August 25. Fees waived include entrance fees and commercial tour fees. Other fees such as camping and concession fees are not included.

Higher Lake Levels and Storm Response Mean No Dredging at Platte River Mouth this Fall
For the second year in a row, the Platte River mouth will not be dredged to deepen its channel into Lake Michigan during the fall fishing season. With lake levels up and funding down, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (Lakeshore) is not planning to direct scarce resources toward dredging.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Partially Reopens Dune Climb, Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, and Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail
The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and Dune Climb within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (Lakeshore) have partially reopened to the public. The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail has been cleared from Glen Haven to Empire, and this section is now open to the public. These areas were closed after a windstorm on Sunday, August 2 caused severe damage in the area. Leelanau County is still recovering from this emergency.

A new National Park Service report shows that 1,395,400 visitors to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in 2014 spent $144.7 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 2,309 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $181.7 million.
