March FUNday - Squirrely for spring!

Join us on Sunday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the visitor center in Empire to get Squirrely for Spring. We'll drive to the site where there will be a short hike, outdoor games, and a chance to discover how other squirrely creatures start spring ahead of schedule.

Snow olympics 2011

snowballthrow2We only had two teams, but they had a blast competing in the 2nd annual F.U.N. Snow Olympics! After creating family flags, everyone followed rangers Amie and Mary and the NPS flag in the parade of athletes. Our competitors then deftly snowshoed the relay course; accurately smacked the target with snowballs; carefully crafted 12-in high snowmen; and artfully carved snow angels in the snow. Hot chocolate and goodies capped the day. Take a look at the photos below.

2nd annual F.U.N. snow olympics!

olympics_logoIt's time once again for our Snow Olympics. Join us on February 13th at 2:00 p.m. and let your family spirit shine! We will make Olympic flags for each family and then car caravan to the site for our own winter games with snowshoes, snowmen, relays, and more. If our snow deteriorates before then, park rangers will lead outdoor nature competitions appropriate for the weather that day. This event is open to all families. Winter survival skills F.U.N.

kidsshelter2From falling through ice to spending the night outdoors we learned and tried our hands at survival skills this January Sunday FUNday. A Park Ranger doll took the plunge through icy paper to demonstrate how to pull and kick yourself out of a hole in the ice, the Dune Climb was the back drop for Avalanche tips, and down the dune-side trail we built snow and deadwood shelters. When we were nearly completed with the deadwood/leaf/baby's breath shelter, children and parents took a turn inside to see what still needed filling-in.
