Thank you for your interest and participation in Sitka National Historical Park’s amateur photo contest to celebrate National Public Lands Day on September 27, 2014.

For over 120 years, visitors have embarked on their own unique journeys through time and place as they experience the park’s dynamic cultural and natural landscape. Whether you’ve lived in Sitka your whole life or visited for an afternoon, you too, have seen the interplay natural and cultural changes in the park.

The photo exhibit, Sitka National Historical Park: Then & Now, illustrates these interpretations of time and place, and the slightly different lens through which each visitor views and experiences the park.


All entries must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2014 at the Visitor Center front desk, or by email to andrea_willingham@nps.gov.

Photos may be submitted in the following categories:


  1. Native Heritage: Any aspect of Southeast Alaska Native culture relevant to the park.
  2. Sitka NHP Wildlife: Alaskan wildlife in their natural habitat relevant to the park.
  3. Sitka NHP Scenery: Southeast Alaska’s beauty as seen from the park.
  4. E.W. Merrill: Reproduce the historic E.W. Merrill photographs of the park (historic photos may be obtained at the visitor center or online for reference)
  5. Small Perspectives: A category for youth ages 13 and under. Take a picture of your favorite place, or activity in Sitka National Historical Park.
Rules and Details:

  1. Entrants must be amateur photographers. For the purpose of the competition, an amateur photographer is one who derives less than 25% of their income from the sale of their photos.
  2. The National Park Service reserves the right to reject any photograph or to place a photo in a different category.
  3. A maximum of three (3) photographs may be submitted per contestant.
  4. Photo entries for other photo contests or previous Sitka NHP contests may not be re-entered.
  5. Photographs may be in color or in black and white. There will not be separate categories, black and white and color photographs will be judged together.
  6. Photographs should not be altered other than reasonable adjustments to tone and contrast.
  7. Entries delivered to the visitor center or mailed should include one completed, signed entry form for each entry.
  8. Electronic entries should include the photo release statement in the body of the email. (See section 4 below).
  9. The National Park Service assumes no responsibility for damage or loss that might occur.
  10. Due to spatial restrictions it may not be possible to display all entries in our resulting exhibit, Sitka National Historical Park: Then & Now.
 
Submitting photos electronically:

  1. Entries will be accepted via email at andrea_willingham@nps.gov
  2. Attach a photo, or share a link, that is at least 4” x 6” at 300 dpi. The maximum size is 11” x 14” at 300 dpi. Accepted file formats include jpeg, tiff, and png.
  3. In the body of the e-mail include: your name, location (city, state), category, title of work (or leave untitled), e-mail and/or mailing address (preferred contact), and daytime phone number.
  4. Copy and paste the following photo release phrase into the body of the e-mail: “I attest that I own the copyright to the attached photo(s) and agree to release the photo(s) to the public domain under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 licensing.”
 
Submitting entries at the park visitor center and by mail:

  1. Printed photographs will be accepted at the visitor center and must be accompanied by a completed entry form. Entry forms are available at the visitor center and online.
  2. Minimum photo size is 4”x 6”, maximum size is 11”x 14”.
  3. Photographs may be mounted or matted for hanging purposes, but it is not required.

Prizes: There will be three first place ribbons awarded for the adult categories, and a People’s Choice award for the most popular photo on the park’s Facebook page. Every entrant in the children’s category will receive a participation ribbon.
 
Important Dates:

  • August 22 – September 14: Entries will be accepted by e-mail, mail, or at the park visitor center.
  • September 19 – 26: Local judges will evaluate submissions and determine category winners, taking into consideration originality, artistic composition, technical quality, and whether the photos showcase Sitka NHP resources.
  • September 19 – 26: Voting on the Sitka NHP Facebook page for the People’s Choice Award.
  • September 27: Winners announced during National Public Lands Day Celebration.
  • September 19 – October 17: Photographs will be displayed in the Sitka NHP visitor center.
  • October 17 – 30: Photographs may be picked up at the Sitka NHP visitor center daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Submissions will not be mailed back to contestants.
