Sitka National Historical Park will be showing two movies at the visitor center theater this weekend. The Battle of Horseshoe Bend will be shown on Saturday, February 7th. This film tells the tale of Andrew Jackson’s involvement in a decisive battle during the Creek War of 1813 to 1814. On Sunday, February 8th, the film will be History Uncovered, which documents frontier life in coastal 18th century Georgia and the struggle between the Spanish and British empires for control. These films will be shown on the hour, every hour, from 9am to 4pm. It is free and open to everyone, so stop by the visitor center before your walk through the park this coming weekend.

The transfer of Alaska from Russia took place in Sitka. On October 18, 1867, the Russian flag was lowered on Castle Hill, home of Alaska's Russian governors, the American flag was raised, and a brief exchange of statements completed the transfer of Alaska to the United States.
