Sitka National Historical Park, (July 18, 2014) - Due to an administrative error, Sitka National Historical Park is re-advertising the GS-09 permanent, full time, subject-to-furlough position that was announced in June. More than one position may be filled from this advertisement. The incumbent will work full-time for at least 26 weeks (13 pay periods) per year, and may be placed in non-pay status for up to 26 weeks (13 pay periods).
As a member of the park’s interpretation team, the selectee will research, develop and present interpretive, walks, talks, tours, and education programs on the cultural and natural history of Sitka National Historical Park and Southeast Alaska. The selectee will serve as a front-line representative for the park’s education and outreach initiatives. Additionally, the incumbent will serve as a liaison for cultural art demonstration activities, manage the park’s cultural center studio space, and will administer the Artist-in-Residence program. This position will contribute substantially to the development, management and maintenance of a high-quality year-round visitor services program. Incumbent will perform work at the park's visitor center, greeting and answering visitor questions. The position will involve work on software-specific projects including the desktop publishing and database management as well with the administration and coordination of interpretive facilities. Some fee collection duties may be required. Incumbent will assist with special interpretive programs and projects including the development of written interpretive materials. The ranger will also be responsible for the supervision of volunteers, Student Conservation Association employees, interns, and, if appropriate, seasonal staff in a limited capacity. If selected, appointee will submit to a background investigation for suitability determination. Duties require the ability to climb stairs in the Russian Bishop's House National Historic Landmark.
Any U.S. citizen who has acquired special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural or cultural resources of Sitka National Historical Park, by reason of having either lived or worked in or near the park. The areas considered within Sitka are: Baranof Island, which includes the communities of Sitka and Port Alexander, and small communities of a seasonal nature including Little Port Walter, Baranof Warm Springs, Biorka Island and Warm Springs Bay. Applicants will not qualify for this position if they have only lived and worked in the areas considered on a temporary seasonal basis. This level of knowledge would be acquired by having lived or worked in or near the park for at least 12 months, to include all four seasons. Short seasonal residency is not qualifying as this would not provide the level of knowledge or expertise that is gained through experiencing the range of climactic conditions and associated impacts on the resources.
In accordance with 36 CFR 13.42(a)(i), a “local rural resident” is any person who has his/her primary, permanent home within the resident zone as defined by this section (see below) and whenever absent from this primary, permanent home, has the intention of returning to it."
The GS-09 park ranger earns $25.08 per hour, generally works a standard 40-hour week, and is entitled to paid holidays and both annual and sick leave. This position may involve weekend work or performance of duties before or after “normal” working hours. Government housing is not available. A driver’s license is recommended.
