The postponed raising of the Centennial Totem Pole at Sitka National Historical Park has been rescheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, May 15. This event is the culmination of a year of events and activities to mark the 100th year of Alaska's oldest national park, including the presentation of a Centennial Ravenstail robe from Tlingit artist Teri Rofkar in March 2010, the E.W. Merrill photographic exhibit in April 2010, the Tlingit-Alutiiq Cultural Sharing in June, the 2010 International Conference on Russian America in August and the Alaska Day celebrations in October.

Historic photo of Castle Hill

The transfer of Alaska from Russia took place in Sitka. On October 18, 1867, the Russian flag was lowered on Castle Hill, home of Alaska's Russian governors, the American flag was raised, and a brief exchange of statements completed the transfer of Alaska to the United States.
