Park Continues Evening Program Series
Sitka National Historical Park, (February 7, 2013) - Looking to liven up these long Alaskan nights? Sitka National Historical Park continues its winter program series, "An Evening in the Park" during the month of February.
Wednesday, February 13th For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska 7:00 p.m.
In 1867, when the United States purchased the Alaska territory, the promise of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights didn't apply to Alaska Natives. Their struggle to win justice is one of the great, untold chapters of the American civil rights movement, culminating at the violent peak of World War II with the passage of one of the nation's first equal rights laws. Join us for this award-winning documentary in honor of Elizabeth Peratrovich Day. (Running time 56 minutes.) ** Please note that this program takes place on Wednesday.
Thursday, February 21st Evening Program 7:00 p.m.
On Thursday, February 21st, the beauty of the Arctic will come to Sitka when Voices of the Wilderness Artist-in-Residence MK MacNaughton presents an evening program on her inspirational visit to Noatak National Preserve deep within the Brooks Range. MacNaughton visited the preserve near Kotzebue, Alaska in September 2012 as a "Voices of the Wilderness Resident Artist." She hiked, sketched, painted, and soaked in as much of the vibrant fall color as her memory could carry away. When she returned to Juneau, she dedicated three months to creating a series of paintings and drawings from this experience. Please join us for an illustrated evening program showcasing her work and her experience in this beautiful national preserve.
Saturday, February 23rd Free Encaustic Painting Workshop 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Join artist MK MacNaughton for a free workshop on encaustic painting. Try your hand at creating art with heated beeswax on a wooden board. No experience is necessary-just a willingness to roll up your sleeves and give it a try! All ages are welcome, but children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Workshop will take place at the Visitor Center.
