Join Ranger George Bennett for a program on the tradition of the Potlatch and the significance of this custom in the culture of the Tlingit people. The talk and discussion will be illustrated with slides. This free public program begins at 7:00 pm on August 31st in the park visitor center theater.

The transfer of Alaska from Russia took place in Sitka. On October 18, 1867, the Russian flag was lowered on Castle Hill, home of Alaska's Russian governors, the American flag was raised, and a brief exchange of statements completed the transfer of Alaska to the United States.
