In Search of Alaska's First Potato and Tlingit Agriculture
Juneau resident Elizabeth Kunibe will present a slide show on the history of the potato in Alaska this Friday, June 27th, at 7:00 P.M. in the Sitka National Historical Park Visitor Center. She will also discuss Tlingit and Haida garden sites found in Southeast Alaska. Her food system research is funded by the National Science Foundation through a grant from the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR).
Ms. Kunibe’s research has taken her throughout Southeast Alaska and to several areas in the Yukon Territory to research early planting practices of Tlingit, Haida and Athabascan People. The presentation is the culmination of the first four years of research done cooperatively with a team of USDA plant geneticists and science support from the Subarctic Agricultural Research Unit located in Fairbanks.
