Laws & Policies

A variety of rules and regulations protect park resources and provide visitors with a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some highlights:

  • Bicycles: You must walk your bicycle on park trails.
  • Drones: Unmanned aircraft are not allowed in this or any national park site.
  • Fishing: You must possess a valid Alaska state fishing license and you must comply with Alaska state laws and regulations. Fishing for non-salmon species is permitted in Indian River. Please read and become familiar with the Alaska state Sport Fishing regulations.
  • Firearms: Federal law prohibits firearms in certain facilities in this park and prohibts use or discharge of a firearm anywhere in this park. Learn more about carrying firearms in the park.
  • Historic Sites and Artifacts: Archeological sites have strong protection under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979.
  • Marijuana: While Alaska provides for regulated possession and use of marijuana, it remains an illegal drug under federal law. Possession or use of marijuana or other federally controlled substances inside this or any National Park Service unit (parks, preserves, rivers and monuments) is prohibited.
  • Pets: You must keep pets on a leash that is six feet or shorter and dispose of their waste in a trash can. Only service animals are allowed inside the park's visitor center.

Code of Federal Regulations

Regulations in 36 CFR Parts 1-199 apply to all national park areas. Part 13 contains regulations specific to park areas in Alaska; subpart U contains regulations specific to Sitka National Historical Park.

Superintendent's Compendium

Some regulations delegate authority to the park's superintendent to make designations or impose public use restrictions or conditions in the park. These regulations are contained in the Superintendent's Compendium.
