Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area encompasses 37 counties in northeast Iowa. Interstate 80 is near the southern border and Interstate 35 is near the western border. Minnesota and the Mississippi River form the northern and eastern borders.

Much of our modern world might be an entirely different place if Franklin Roosevelt’s previous vice president, Henry Wallace, had still been in office the day President Roosevelt died. Although not a communist himself, Wallace was endorsed by the Communist Party when he ran for president in 1948.
