On Saturday, July 27, the Shiloh Artillery Crew will be presenting cannon firing demonstrations at Shiloh Battlefield. The crew will be firing the park's 6-pounder smoothbore cannon, a gun which saw its first battles during the Mexican-American War in 1846-48. "There were more 6-pounders at Shiloh than any other type of cannon," said Park Ranger Joe Davis. "Nearly forty percent of the big guns in this battle were 6-pounders," Davis noted, "with fifty-six being used by the Confederate batteries and forty being used by the Union forces."
The cannon firing demonstrations will take place at 11:00 am, 1:30 pm, and 3:00 pm on Saturday across from the park's Visitor Center. Each program will last approximately 30-minutes, and interpret the weapon, its projectiles, and the procedures Civil War artillery crews used to fire the gun during the war. As always, these demonstrations are free and open to the public.
The Visitor Center and bookstore at Shiloh Battlefield will be open during normal operating hours from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Shiloh movie, Shiloh-Fiery Trial is shown in the Visitor Center on the hour beginning at 8:00 am with the last showing at 4:00 pm daily.
