The upcoming 3-day weekend, January 15-17, will be fee-free at Shiloh National Military Park. "In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, there will be no charge to visit Shiloh," announced Superintendent Woody Harrell. This will be the first of many fee-free days that the National Park Service will be observing in 2011. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, has stated that "because of these tough economic times, our free-free days will give families many opportunities to enjoy our nation’s heritage and natural beauty in meaningful and affordable ways."

The 2011 fee-free dates will be the weekend of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January 15-17), National Park Week (April 16-24), the first day of summer (June 21), National Public Lands Day (September 24), and the weekend of Veterans Day (Novemeber 11-13).

In addition to fee-free days, Shiloh will be offering many special programs, tours and events in 2011 as the park, like all Civil War sites, commemorates the 150th anniversary of the bloodiest war in American history. Superintendent Harrell, encourages everyone to "check local newspapers, the park website at www.nps.gov/shil, or call the Visitor Center at 731-689-5696, for updates on scheduled events at Shiloh."
