Corinth to Host Book Club
Contact: Tom Parson, 662 287-9273
Shiloh National Military Park will once again host a book club at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center beginning on Thursday, January 30, 2014. “What originated as a weekly staff book discussion has turned into a wonderful community event,” stated park superintendent, John Bundy. “This is the third book discussion we have opened to the community. We look forward to our regular members joining us again and we welcome new participants.”
This book discussion will be on “The Tarnished Cavalier: Major General Earl Van Dorn, C.S.A.” by Arthur B. Carter. The public is invited to join as Park Ranger Tom Parson leads the discussion of the life and military career of Major General Earl Van Dorn. His impact on Corinth was as great as any officer on either side during the war. In the days following Shiloh he arrived in Corinth with his Army of the West where he played a major role in the Confederate attempts to break the Siege of Corinth. He returned to Corinth the following October as the commander of the new Army of West Tennessee. He is known not only for his costly defeats at Pea Ridge and Corinth, but also for his brilliant cavalry victory at Holly Springs.
Anyone interested in joining the discussion should read Chapters 1 & 2 of the book prior to the first meeting on Thursday, January 30. The chat will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. and last for one hour. This discussion is very open and informal. Books are available for purchase at the park bookstore. For more information call the Center at 662 287-9273.
