A portion of the work done in Duncan Field for 2004 Park Day

Park Day 2005 - April 2

"In honor of Park Preservation Day, Shiloh National Military Park will host a work day, Saturday April 2, to clear undergrowth and vines from the National Cemetery wall," Shiloh National Military Park Superintendent Woody Harrell announced today. "This national event allows park-minded citizens all over the nation to work with their favorite national, state, and local parks to conserve and protect these cherished sites," he added.

Volunteers will remove unsightly brush and vines along the eastern portion of the cemetery wall. Established in 1866, Shiloh National Cemetery contains around 4,000 burials, the majority of which are American soldiers, and in some instances, family members of veterans. The encircling wall dates to 1867, and has recently become overgrown with ivy, weeds, and vines along the river bluff. This growth detracts from the beauty of the cemetery and if left unchecked can damage the wall itself.

The work will be conducted from 8:00AM to 12:00 PM on April 2. To participate, please contact Park Ranger Joe Davis by telephone: call (731) 689-5696 or email joe_d_davis@nps.gov. All volunteers are requested to meet at the Visitor Center and to bring gloves for the clearing.
