Shenandoah National Park
Group Trips

Groups of up to 10 persons can stay in the backcountry at Shenandoah NP. Larger groups should break into groups of no more than 10, with each group having its own leaders, itinerary, hiking route, and campsites. If you must camp together, plan to use a campground. If transportation is likely to be an issue, the Big Run/Jones Run/Loft Mountain area has the most flexibility in providing hiking for several groups on different routes with different campsites.

The detailed routes have some campsites big enough to accommodate a group of 10. Still, give yourself plenty of time to find a spot. Be prepared to teach and use pristine camping techniques if no pre-existing sites are available.

All groups should have at least one (preferably two) experienced leader(s). Be sure to plan your hike to accommodate your least fit and least experienced persons, and teach appropriate Leave No Trace techniques (including proper disposal of human waste!). If human waste disposal is likely to be a problem, please use one of our campgrounds which has toilet facilities available (many backpacking trips can be planned with this option).

A closeup of a mountain laurel blossom along Shenandoah's Skyline Drive.

Did You Know?
Although it’s native to these mountains, much of the beautiful mountain laurel you see blooming along Skyline Drive in June was planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
