  • Vehicle Fuel Available at Big Meadows ONLY!

    Vehicle fuel is only available at Big Meadows (mile 52). Gas service has been discontinued at the Loft and Elkwallow areas.

Alcohol Policy

In general, alcohol is permitted in Shenandoah National Park by those over 21 years of age. Open containers of alcohol are not allowed in motor vehicles. The park superintendent has established the following closures to alcohol consumption and possession of open containers:

Alcohol is prohibited in all park and concession buildings except:

  • Employee housing.
  • Concession operated tap rooms, restaurants, guest rooms, and other meeting areas where the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages is permitted by business agreements and concession contracts.

Alcohol is prohibited in all parking areas, pullouts and overlooks on the Skyline Drive between the North Entrance at mile 0 to mile 4.

Alcohol is prohibited in the Lower Rapidan area. This includes:

  • Rapidan River Trail.
  • Along the Rapidan River from the eastern boundary of the Virginia State Game Area to the Park boundary near Graves Mill.
  • The corridors on and within view of the Rapidan Fire Road from the eastern boundary of the Virginia State Area to the park boundary near Blakey Ridge.

Did You Know?

The green sharply serrated leaves of chestnut shoots can be found throughout the park.

American chestnut trees, whose trunks were killed off by a fungus blight long ago, still send up shoots that you can see along many of Shenandoah National Park’s trails.
