Shenandoah National Park Opens Picnic Grounds in South District
Shenandoah National Park recently opened picnic grounds in the park’s South District. The Dundo Picnic Grounds, formerly the Dundo Group Campground, is located at Milepost 80 along Skyline Drive. The picnic grounds are suitable for both small and large group picnicking. Amenities in the picnic grounds include picnic tables, grills, water, and pit toilets. The existing comfort station facilities at Dundo, originally built in 1966, will be replaced sometime during the summer season with more environmentally friendly vault toilets.
Superintendent Chas Cartwright said, “We’re pleased to offer our visitors and park neighbors additional locations to recreate in the park, and we welcome everyone back to the South District to enjoy a day of picnicking.”
Dundo replaces the Loft Mountain Picnic Grounds which were closed in 2006 in an overall effort to create operational efficiencies and better utilize park inventories. To further use inventories efficiently and in an effort to enhance visitor experience group camping was moved to Big Meadows, Loft Mountain and Mathews Arm Campgrounds.
Although many facilities in Shenandoah National Park are closed during winter months, Dundo Picnic Grounds will remain open year round.
