Shenandoah National Park Superintendent Chas Cartwright announced that on March 1, 2006, the park will begin charging slightly higher fees for certain entrance permits. Fee increases will apply to both the per-person and single, private vehicle permits.
Entrance fees will include the following options: Private, noncommercial vehicle $10 (7 days – December through February) Private, noncommercial vehicle $15 (7 days – March through November) Motorcycle – $10 (7 days – year round) Single entry (non-motorized) $5 (7 days – December through February) Single entry (non-motorized) $8 (7 days – March through November) Annual permit $30 (one year from month of purchase) National Parks Pass - $50 (valid for one year entry to all NPS units that charge an entrance fee)
Superintendent Cartwright stated "The fee program is critical to the park. Eighty percent of the fees collected stay in the park and go directly into improving facilities and providing services that are important to visitors. For example, fee revenue at Shenandoah is currently financing projects such as the rehabilitation and renovation of Bryd Visitor Center, including installation of new exhibits; trail reconstruction and repairing of masonry rock walls along Skyline Drive." Entrance fees for Shenandoah National Park have not increased since December 1997, when Congress authorized and implemented the Recreation Fee Demonstration Program.
The Fee Demonstration Program was recently replaced by the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA). Under the authority of FLREA, parks are allowed to retain up to 80 percent of the recreation fees collected. The program calls for using entrance fees collected by the parks to continue addressing the deferred maintenance backlog, with a strong emphasis toward projects that will enhance visitor health and safety, access, and enjoyment.
Campground fees will decrease at Mathews Arm, Lewis Mountain and Loft Mountain from $16 to $14 per night. Complete information on all of the campgrounds within the park is available at: here...
