Selma, Alabama--The Lowndes County Interpretive Center (City of Whitehall, on U.S. Highway 80 West in Lowndes County) hosted Junior Ranger Activities on Saturday, April 26, 2008. The activities began at 10:00 a.m. and ended at 4:00 p.m. Youth had the opportunity to participate in educational fun-filled activities and earn Jr. Ranger Badges. The event was FREE.

Youth participants were given an Activity Guide while visiting the Lowndes Interpretive Center to encourage discovery at the Center. The booklets presented a variety of engaging activities addressing various learning styles. Joe Glover, a Tent City resident took the participants on a historic walking tour of Tent City. A Certificate of Achievement was given to participants, which included the Junior Ranger motto, "Explore, Learn, Protect: Be a Junior Ranger." During the presentation of the certificates, the Center also presented Junior Ranger badges and other incentives. All youth completing the activities received rewards during an informal ceremony by National Park Service Rangers.

Saturday, April 26, 2008 was observed as National Jr. Ranger Day at National Parks across the United States. Junior Ranger programs engage young people in age-appropriate activities that allow them to discover the significance of a specific site, introduce them to the national park system and to the mission of the National Park Service. Junior Ranger programs are designed to provide participants with the flexibility to discover and interact with the park at their own pace and within the limits of their visit.

The mission of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) is to conserve the scenery, the natural and historic objects, and the wildlife in United States national parks, and to provide for the public's enjoyment of these features in a manner that will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.

Everyone was invited to the Lowndes Interpretive Center and were welcomed to participate in the National Junior Ranger Day Program Activities on Saturday, April 26th, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. FREE OF CHARGE.
