As of 4 pm on October 24, ignitions were complete on the Mosquito Prescribed Burn in the Mineral King area of Sequoia National Park. The final acreage included in the burn totaled 1,485 acres. “Overall, the objectives were met for this prescribed fire”, says John Goss, Burn Boss for the Mosquito. “One objective was to reduce the burnable vegetation on the forest floor by 60-80%. The lower elevation vegetation that burned was within these percentages. Another important objective was to limit the smoke impacts to Three Rivers and surrounding communities. Mineral King and Silver City had a couple of smoky days after ignitions were complete. This was due to a cold front that came in, creating an inversion over the fire which trapped the smoke in the local area.” Fire management staff will continue to monitor the area for any additional activity. Residual smoke can still be expected in the Mineral King Valley, as well as potentially in the Three Rivers area. The Tar Gap Trail will remain closed until the 2015 season, due to its proximity to the burn. The Mineral King gate will close for the season at noon on Monday, October 27.
