Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park
The Fire Place

In 2006, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks unveiled a new mobile learning center called The Fire Place. The center is a small cargo trailer that houses exhibits and activities about fire history, ecology, and management.

The learning center is beautifully decorated with three hand-painted murals by artist Ali Pearson of Alumni Exhibits. The murals depict different fire strategies (suppression, prescribed fire, and wildland fire use) within some of the parks spectacular ecosystems (the foothills, sequoia groves, and the High Sierra).

The Fire Place is used at special community events, school programs, and around the parks, especially during fire incidents. Contact the parks to find out where the mobile learning center will be next.

The Fire Place offers several fun activities for individuals or families to enjoy. People can:

Follow the clues in the Mural Hunt

Look for fire scars on tree rings

Dress-up in fire clothing

Use fire equipment

Practice fire tactics at the sand table

Color a mural

Read books in the "Fire Library"

The Fire Place was made possible by the Sequoia Fund,
the Bank of the Sierra, and Tru Trailers of Fresno.

Did You Know?
Picnic areas are a major source of problem bears. Bears quickly lose their fear of humans when allowed access to our food. They wind up dead, hit by cars or shot because they threaten people. Store all food immediately on arrival, stay close to food at tables, and put all trash in bearproof cans!
