Policy for Use of Images Posted on the Southeast Archeological Center Web Site

A. General Uses

Permission requests to use illustrations posted on the SEAC Web Site should be directed to John Jameson, Webmaster, by e-mail at john_jameson@nps.gov, or by telephone at: 850-580-3011 extension 243. Use of images downloaded or derived from the Southeast Archeological Center should be limited to non-commercial, private uses for educational purposes. Uses by institutions should be limited to one time educational purposes only. A credit line should include the phrase: “Courtesy, Southeast Archeological Center, U.S. National Park Service." If the illustration refers to an original work of art, photo, or other item, the credit line should include the name of the artist or originator, when known. If you wish to use different wording in the credit line, please contact John Jameson at the above address.

B. Use of Original Art Images

1. Government Use
Many color illustrations are derived from original works by artist Martin Pate, who retains copyright. Original art work can be used as illustrations and exhibits within the educational and preservation missions of the Southeast Archeological Center and the National Park Service. Reproduction of artwork is limited to National Park Service use for educational purposes, such as:
a. Educational posters and brochures for purposes of public awareness, resource protection and sensitively, public commemorations, and announcements.
b. Covers and inside illustrations for educational popular histories and other publications.
c. Wayside exhibit illustrations.

2. Private and Institutional One-time Educational Uses
Many color illustrations are derived from original works by artist Martin Pate, who retains copyright. 3. Items for Sale: Reproduction of art work in any form for sale must be approved in writing by the artist or his heirs who retain copyright. Contact: Martin Pate, e-mail: pateart@juno.com; telephone: 770-251-5286; Internet: www.pateart.com.

a. Publication Illustrations: In situations where an art work will be used for a book cover or inside illustration to accompany educational material or to aid in the sale of such material, approval in writing must be obtained from the artist or his heirs. These situations are usually approved with the following requirements:
(1) A nominal courtesy fee
(2) Copies of the final book or other item supplied to the artist or heirs
(3) Proof approval by artist or heirs when possible
(4) Credit line for artist and Southeast Archeological Center
(5) One time use agreement
(6) Safe return of original transparency, prints, or digital files

b. Misc. sale items: When the art work in any form is used to aid in the sale of items or materials, approval in writing must be obtained from the artist or his heirs. Examples include posters, prints, book covers, coffee mugs, T-shirts, magnets, postcards, or any other item produced for sale by any group or individual.
