Soap Box Derby
Scotts Bluff National Monument will be hosting a commemorative Soap Box Derby race on Saturday July 7th beginning at 9:00 a.m. and running until all heats have been completed.This special event will be the first time a fully sanctioned race has been held at the park since 1951 and is being held in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of the completion of the historic Summit Road at the Monument, the 75th anniversary of the All American Soap Box Derby program out of Akron, Ohio as well as the 125th anniversary of the City of Gering.The public is invited to view the derby cars in the pit area and spend the day enjoying a time honored tradition.
The public is advised that the Summit Road will be closed to vehicle usage during the event; however modified park shuttle service will be available.Scotts Bluff National Monument invites anyone who had raced in a derby at the monument from 1939 to 1951 to call Kevin Haberman (308-436-9725) or AJ Legault (308-436-9716) in order to attend the event as a special alumni guest of the park.

Originally the road to the summit did not have a center line painted on it. Instead a buzz strip was made to alert drivers by sound and vibration that they were about to drift into the other lane.
