Share your time and make a big difference at your local National Park Service site as a Volunteer-In-Parks (VIP).

VIP’s highlight the best of our community and welcome visitors from around the country to Kiowa County and to this special and historic location. With a number of volunteer positions and opportunities available you can pick the one that best fits your talents and availability.

  • Volunteer individually or with a group
  • Contribute to a one-time service project
  • Serve on a recurring basis at the Massacre Site or in the Eads office
  • Free training with NPS staff is provided

By contributing your skills and knowledge through these rewarding and engaging opportunities, you are helping tell the story of what happened at Sand Creek, remembering those who were lost, and working toward a better future where such atrocities never happen again.

We look forward to working with you at your hometown park!

Volunteer Positions:

Volunteer Interpreter

This position is located at the Massacre Site 30 minutes outside of Eads and works both indoors and outdoors. Volunteer Interpreters welcome visitors to the site, provide basic information to assist in planning their visit, staff our non-profit bookstore, and answer questions on the local area. Additional opportunities for growth and experiences are encouraged. Free training is provided on an ongoing basis in addition to self-paced research.

Visitor Services Volunteer

This position is dedicated to the Visitor and Education Center in the town of Eads and works almost entirely indoors. Volunteers staff the information desk and welcome visitors to the site, provide basic information to assist in planning their visit, staff our non-profit bookstore, and answer questions on the local area. In addition, this position often answers phone inquiries from visitors, provides directions, and assists with miscellaneous administrative tasks. Free training is provided on an ongoing basis in addition to self-paced research.

Maintenance Volunteer

Maintenance volunteers assist outdoors with projects including protection from invasive species, fire prevention, landscaping, and trail maintenance to name a few. Free training is provided on an ongoing basis in addition to self-paced research.

Group Service Projects

Gather your crew and plan a one-time volunteer project. Group service days are great for team building, hands-on learning, and a break from the routine. Gather your community organization, youth group, school, or faith group together and get outside to enjoy, and contribute to, your local National Park site. Consider contributing during one of these national days of service, MLK Day of Service in January, National Park Week in April, 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance in September, National Public Lands Day in September, or Veterans Day in November.
