Google Maps is an internet based mapping program. We do not claim that all directions provided by Google Maps are accurate. For each map displayed on this site, we have attempted to provide coordinates and addresses that will get you to a park site, trailhead, or facility on open roads.

Locations are designated with an "A" pin on the map. Click the "A" or the "View Larger Map" link to enter your departure location and click get directions.

Google Maps will sometimes see gated roads as available routes. In order to make sure that this is not the case, check if roads are going through park areas and if roads are named "fire road." This usually an indicates that it is likely a gated road. Use the Google Maps interface to move your route to a main road by clicking on the route and dragging it to an alternate road.

Terrain, Photo, Video, Wiki, and Road information is not produced or reviewed for accuracy or content by the National Park Service. This information may assist you in learning more about how other visitors are experiencing the recreation area.

Backbone trail hikes lead to views of mountains, canyons, and the Pacific Ocean.

Did You Know?
Piece by piece, a trail is forging its way along the "backbone" of the recreation area. California State Parks took the first step toward a 65-mile Backbone Trail in 1978. With 5 miles left to go, single track trails and fireroads will unite this patchwork of public parklands from east to west.
