Internships-Wildlife (Carnivore) Internship
The National Park Service is looking for a highly motivated individual willing to commit to a six month internship tracking carnivores throughout the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California, a fragmented habitat adjacent to Los Angeles. This project assesses the effect habitat fragmentatioin and urban development have on native carnivores (bobcats, coyotes and mountain lions).
 
Major Duties:
  • Interns may participate in all aspects of project field work, data entry and processing, and data analysis.
  • Radio tracking bobcats and mountain lions.
  • Assist wildlife technicians with trapping bobcats and mountain lions, scat surveys and data entry.
  • May assist with other park projects: pitfall traps, small mammal trapping, rabbit surveys, etc.
 
Knowledge Required
  • B.S. in wildlife biology or closely related field.
  • Must be able to hike steep and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work alone and in a team environment.
  • Experience with telemetry and tracking wildlife is desired but not required.
  • Must be detail-oriented and well organized.
  • Have good oral and written communication skills and ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Must have own transportation to and from worksite. Government vehicles are available for intern use within the scope of their internship.
  • Experience in driving 4wd is a plus.

 
Work Site and Conditions
  • Position involves substantial amounts of vehicle travel and hiking in remote areas.
  • Commitment of six months full time (40 hours per week).
  • Field duties may involve work at unusual hours, including early morning, evening, and late night shifts.
