Internships-Volunteer Management Intern

This intern will help improve the coordination and opportunities for volunteering at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The intern will gain both management and administrative skills in addition to specialized skills such as interviewing. Intern will develop or improve communication skills which are necessary in coordinating group projects both in-house and with cooperating agencies and non profit organizations.
Major Duties:
- Responds to inquiries for volunteering.
- Interviews potential volunteers.
- Provides orientation to new volunteers.
- Communicates with various divisional staff to develop group volunteer projects.
- May supervise individual or group volunteer projects.
- May perform administrative tasks as assigned.
Knowledge Required (in addition to the General Background requirements for all interns):
- Standard computer skills and basic writing skills are needed.
- Good communication skills are needed as intern will spend a majority of time in oral communication.
Possible Projects
- Developing volunteer position descriptions or updating existing ones.
- Producing at least one volunteer newsletter.
- Coordinating and supervising at least two group volunteer projects.
Work Site and Conditions
- Intern will work at Park Headquarters in Thousand Oaks, but may work at other areas as needed.
- Work will involve some physical activity, including hiking or walking at various park sites.
- Projects may involve three to four hours standing outside in exposed areas. Physical activity is mostly limited to collecting tools and other related materials for outdoor group projects.
- Intern may work full or part time, either weekdays or weekends. Some weekend work may be required.
- Valid driver's license is required, as intern may drive a government vehicle.
