Internships-Outdoor Recreation Planning

The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA), a unit of the National Park Service, is looking for an intern to assist with research and studies related to development of an interagency trail management plan for the national recreation area. The intern will obtain an understanding of trail management challenges and their implications for National Park Service outdoor recreation management in the Santa Monica Mountains. The intern will be assigned to the Division of Planning, Science and Resource Management and will work with the park's Outdoor Recreation Planner.

Major Duties:

  • Develop an annotated bibliography of literature addressing multiple use on recreational trails.
  • Complete reseach and update graphics on Comparative Trail Density Study.
  • Perform field studies on visitor behavior on recreational trails.
  • Other duties relative to trail planning may be assigned.
Requirements:
  • Academic background in outdoor recreation planning, geography, community planning, public administration, is desirable.
  • Familiarity with Santa Monica Mountains recreational trails would be helpful.
  • Candidates must have experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software. Experience with geographic information system and other graphics software is desireable.
  • Intern must be resourceful and able to work well independently.
  • Intern must be detail-oriented and organized.
  • Good oral and written communication skills are required plus the ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Valid driver’s license is required as intern may drive a government vehicle.
Work Site and Conditions
  • Intern may work indoors at Park Headquarters in Thousand Oaks on weekdays.
  • Computer work at home may be possible.
  • Field work in warm weather conditions may be required.
  • Intern may work part or full time for the duration of the project.

Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area was established in 1978, but the National Park Service did not own public parkland in the area until 1980. National Park Rangers devised clever ways to promote the national park goals without land by creating thriving partnerships with many agencies.
