Internships-Native Plant Nursery
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is currently conducting re-vegetation projects on several sites. Many plants are needed to accomplish these projects. The plants must be true Santa Monica Mountains native plants. Only seeds collected in the Santa Monica Mountains and plants grown from those seeds will have the gene characteristics of true Santa Monica Mountains native plants. The native plant nursery intern will help us to achieve that purpose.
 
Major Duties:
  • Work with volunteers to propagate and care for native plants.
  • Collect and process seeds.
  • Assist with re-vegetation projects.
  • Maintain tools and manage supplies for the nursery.
 
Knowledge Required (in addition to the General Background requirements for all interns):
  • College student or recent graduate with a background in botany, horticulture, ecology, environmental studies or related field.
  • Familiarity with Santa Monica Mountains native plant vegetation is helpful.
  • Ability to keep detailed and accurate records is required.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team, be detail-oriented and organized.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Must have own transportation to and from worksite. Government vehicles are available for intern use within the scope of their internship.
 
Work Site and Conditions
  • Work will be done at our native plant nursery at Rancho Sierra Vista in Newbury Park.
  • Seed collection may require some hiking in rough terrain and dense brush.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
  • Commitment of 12 weeks, full time, is preferred. Part time schedules can be arranged.
  • Intern will work weekdays and some Saturdays. Specific schedules will be determined based upon availability, field work coordinator schedules and project needs.
