Internships-Entomology Intern

Urban encroachment has led to changes in Santa Monica Mountains local insect populations.   Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is looking for an intern to compile baseline inventories or carry on studies of several insect species of interest.  Interns will be given an opportunity to work in partnership with some of our local entomology experts. 


 

Major Duties:

  • Install traps and sample insects for an on-going study.
  • Identify insects
  • Create an individual research project
 

Requirements:

·        College student or recent graduate with a background in biology, botany or ecology and an interest in insects.

·        Ability to identify insects to species using a key.

·        Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team, be detail-oriented and organized.

·        Good oral and written communication skills and ability to follow oral and written directions.

·        Valid driver's license is required.

·        Must have own transportation to and from worksite. Government vehicles are available for intern use within the scope of their internship.

·        Knowledge of Excel and Access is helpful.

 

Work Site and Conditions

·        Position may involve substantial amounts of walking in rough terrain such as dense chaparral or streams.

·        Commitment of 12 weeks, full time, is preferred. The time frame for this study varies, depending on available personnel.

·        Some work may be done at park headquarters in an office environment.

·        Intern will work weekdays. Specific schedules will be determined based upon availability, field work coordinator schedules and project needs.

 

Compensation:

Transportation reimbursement of $10 per day, free housing.
