Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area
Internships-Cultural Resources Intern (Historic Mapping/GIS)
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a unit of the National Park System, is looking for interns to contribute to the park's cultural resource program through archeological, ethnographic and historic mapping projects. Work will be done in coordination with the park Anthropologist or GIS specialist.
 
Major Duties
  • Contributes to the Cultural Resource Atlas of the Santa Monica Mountains.
  • Researches and compiles historic maps about the cultural resources of the Santa Monica Mountains.
  • Scans and geo-references historic maps.
 
Knowledge Required
  • College student or recent graduate with a background in Anthropology, Geography, History, or Native American Studies.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail-oriented and organized.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Background in Geography, History or Anthropology.
  • Knowledge of ArcView.
  • Knowledge of historic geography of southern California is helpful.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Must have own transportation to and from worksite. Government vehicles are available for intern use within the scope of their internship.
 
Workspace and Work Days
  • Intern will work primarily indoors at Park Headquarters in Thousand Oaks.
  • Some research may be conducted at local university map libraries or at federal archives such as Laguna Nigel.
  • Work is somewhat sedentary in an office environment.
  • Occasional work in field situations involves driving, walking and moderate activity.
  • An internship of 12 weeks full time on weekdays is preferred. Part time internships for a longer period of time can be arranged.

The adult female of this cub died in 2005.

A study that began in 2002 reveals a lion and his offspring are surviving in the Santa Monica Mountains. Radio collars track them crossing roads and navigating through open spaces. Their future is uncertain, but with conservation efforts, they may continue to make these mountains their home.
