Internships-Interview - Christy Hill
Introduction

Christy worked as in Interpretation Park Ranger Intern. She researched Paramount Ranch history to develop a timeline and an interpretive program. She has worked in the National Park Visitor Center, delivered volunteer training and worked to develop other programs.

Why did you want to become an intern?

To gain more experience giving interpretive programs and to learn more about the National Park Service.

Which field(s) interest you?

Several actually. I enjoy the field of interpretation and education on public lands. In addition, I am interested in visitor services and visitor behavior. I feel that an understanding of the visitor allows for a better interpretive program and allows for visitors to respect and care for their public lands.

How much time did you commit to your internship?

About 32 hours per week during the summer.

Tell us about your college career.

My first two degrees were an A.S. in Animal Health Technology from Pierce Junior College and a B.S. in Zoology from California Polytechnic State University, Pomona. After my schooling, I worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the Division of Law Enforcement fro 5.5 years. However, I felt a need to go into education/interpretation and leave Law Enforcement. In December of 2001, I obtained a post baccalaureate certificate in Natural Resource Interpretation from Humbolt State University.

What have you gained from your experience as an intern?

My background is in natural resource interpretation and doing the Paramount program has enabled me to get experience in historical interpretation. I also gained a better understanding of how the National Park Service functions and the confidence that my skills and abilities are valued.

Do you feel your goals for this internship have been met?

Yes, and then some. It has been a pleasure working in a positive environment and with a staff that has a strong work ethic. These characteristics allowed me to reach my goals. There is so much more I would like to do, but time doesn't permit.
Sue Nelson, Jill Swift, and Margo Feurer were instrumental in the movement to create a national recreation area near Los Angeles.

Did You Know?
Four state parks were the triumph of a grassroots movement to protect open spaces minutes from Los Angeles in the 1950s & 60s. Three women, Sue Nelson, Jill Swift, and Margo Feuer further galvanized the movement that helped make Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area a reality in 1978.
