Curriculum Materials

The Santa Monica Mountains offers free curriculum-based programs and materials. Ranger-led programs are offered to students in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Programs are held from November through June. For schools in our service area, free transportation may be available. The National Park Legacy program and other curriculum materials are available to schools by request.

    National Park Legacy- Discoverers Grades 1-2

    This is a classroom based, free teacher led program. National Park Legacy Discoverers is designed for first and second graders so they can go on an exploration of National Park Sites and learn about National Parks. Lesson plans include reading, writing, drawing and presenting activities. Activities focus on comparing and contrasting the types of environments found in National Parks including desert, lake, mountain, seashore and Arctic.

    National Park Legacy – Seekers (Grades 6 - 8)

    This is a classroom based, free teacher led program. National Park Legacy Seekers is designed for sixth through eighth grade students so they can go on an exploration of National Park Sites and learn about National Parks. Lesson plans include reading, writing, community service, presenting activities. Activities focus on why places are preserved as national park units and finding information by using maps.

    National Park Labs: Studies of Wildland Fire Ecology

    National Park Labs: Studies of Wildland Fire Ecology

    The National Park Labs: Studies of Wildland Fire Ecology curriculum provides high school students with the opportunity to study wildland fire ecology, and to build an understanding and appreciation for the natural resources of the Santa Monica Mountains. Teachers may also schedule a free Wildland Fire Ecology field trip in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
