Virtual Tour: Salem Maritime NHS
Photograph of the wharves, with Derby Wharf in the center of the picture. The wharves are covered with grass, and there are gravel paths for walking or jogging down the center of the wharves. The photograph was taken at low tide, so the mud flats next to the wharves are visible.

Derby Wharf

View of the wharves of Salem Maritime NHS from the cupola of the Salem Custom House

Extending nearly a half-mile into Salem Harbor, Derby Wharf was the longest wharf constructed in Salem. Built in 1762 and extended to its present length in 1806, the wharf was lined with warehouses that held exotic goods from all over the world. The "counting house" or business office, that once stood at the head of the wharf on Derby street was the hub of Elias Hasket Derby's trade empire.
