The Orientation Center at the head of Central, or Forrester's, wharf was built as a warehouse and was purportedly owned in the 1790s by Elias Hasket Derby, Salem's most famous merchant. The building was originally located on Front Street in downtown Salem and was moved to its present site in 1977. Most of the original materials of the building have been replaced over time, with the exception of the frame, parts of which are visible in the ceiling of the building.
