Superintendent Walter J. Chavez announces that entrance fee to Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal will be waived on January 14-16 for the Martin Luther King,Jr birthday observance. Parks throughout the country will also waive entrance fees during these dates to encourage people to visit the parks during the long holiday weekend.A new granite stone memorial, completed in 2011 and located on the National Mall in Washington DC, honors this civil rights leader and proponent of peace, justice, and equality..

Entrance fees for this weekend are waived for visitors at the fortifications, however this does not include Tour Operators operating under Commercial Use Authorizations within the park. Tour Operators will continue to pay the normal fee, as described in their authorizations.

Enjoy this holiday weekend honoring Martin L. King,Jr with a visit to your park and reflecting on the accomplishments of the civil rights leader Martin L. King Jr," says Superintendent Walter J. Chavez.

This weekend also will bring many visitors to Old San Juan as they participate in the annual San Sebastian Festival. Visitors should be aware that the grounds of El Morro will be closed to the public (36 CFR 1.5) from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM during the celebration of the festival on January 13-15. This temporary closing of the El Morro grounds during these hours will help the National Park Service protect the historical and cultural resources of our World Heritage Site.

San Juan National Historic Site is comprised of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, Fort San Juan de La Cruz (El Cañuelo), the San Juan Gate, Paseo del Morro and most of the City Wall.The fortifications are open every day from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm,except on Tuesdays when the LeLoLai Festival program is held in the main plaza of San Cristóbal from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm.Entrance Fee to San Juan NHS is $3.00 for adults and free for ages 15 and under.
