BEACH CLEAN-UP
San Juan National Historic Site announces their annual spring clean up activity on the beach of Castillo San Cristobal.  Volunteers are invited to participate in the beach clean-up which is scheduled for Saturday, April 18th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m... This stretch of beach sits on the north side of Castillo San Cristobal and features the historic Garita del Diablo and the community of La Perla.  Cleaning this beach contributes to caring for our environment as well as safeguarding our historical resources.

Fifth Annual Kite Festival
Walter J. Chavez, Superintendent, San Juan National Historic Site, announced the 5th annual San Juan National Historic Site Kite Festival to be held on Friday March 20th,  from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and Saturday March 21st 10 am to 4 pm. The festival is traditionally held on the grounds of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and is open to the public free of charge. “We are very pleased to hold this event for a 5th consecutive year and to have expanded it to two days. The additional day will allow us to work directly with the Lincoln School in Old San Juan, whom we have adopted, for promoting the park educational programs” said Superintendent Chavez.  The Kite Festival provides an excellent opportunity for our visitors to participate in contests, educational talks, and of course kite flying, while educating them about the environmental issues relating to kite flying and maintaining the grounds of El Morro.

SAN JUAN NHS CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF PRESERVATION AND PROTECTION
San Juan National Historic Site will offer several programs and activities in commemoration of the parks 60th Anniversary on Saturday, February 14th, 2009. Entrance fees to the fortifications of Castillo San Cristobal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro will be waived on this day so that visitors can enjoy the fortifications and help the park commemorate this special occasion. San Juan National Historic Site was established as a Historic Site in 1949 and a World Heritage Site in 1983.

The fortifications of Castillo San Cristobal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro will be closed on Wednesday, October 15, 2008.

National Public Lands Day
Walter J. Chavez, Superintendent, San Juan National Historic Site announces the observance of  National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on Saturday, September 27th from 9am to 12pm at Paseo del Morro trail starting at the San Juan Gate. NPLD is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance America’s public lands. Last year over 100,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants.  At San Juan NHS last year, approximately a 100 volunteers picked up over 4 tons of garbage from the area surrounding Fort San Juan de la Cruz (Cañuelo) in Isla De Cabras.

San Juan National Historic Site Superintendent Walter J. Chavez announced today the beginning of a new tram service that will run between the two forts, Castillo San Cristóbal and Castillo San Felipe de Morro.

The Superintendent of San Juan National Historic Site, Walter J. Chavez is happy to announce that the Department of the Interior’s Deputy Secretary, Lynn Scarlett will join them for the inauguration of their new Junior Ranger Program.  The event, which also celebrates Junior Ranger Day and National Park Week, will take place on Friday, April 27, 2007 at Castillo San Cristóbal.

Annual Kite Festival
Every year half a million people use the grounds of El Morro for picnics, sports and other activities.  The National Park Service’s mission of preservation is challenged by damaging behavior of leaving literally tons of abandoned kites and food leftovers littering the historic grounds and walls. Through this event the NPS hopes to share and promote environmentally friendly ways to enjoy the park.

More than 200 local residents took the Oath of Allegiance and became United States citizens during a special ceremony on July 3rd at San Juan National Historic Site.

NPS Director Visits San Juan NHS
After a tour of the training facility where park maintenance employees are trained in 18th century, lime-based masonry techniques, Director Fran Mainella rolled up her sleeves and with the assistance of Park Facility Manager Edwin Colon, practiced the trade of applying stucco as it was done 300 years ago.

The earliest fortification of San Juan NHS, Fort San Felipe del Morro was begun in 1539, 68 years before the First English Settlement in Jamestown.
