SAN JUAN NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE CELEBRATES NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY
San Juan, PR. – On Saturday, September 27, 2014, San Juan National Historic Site will be celebrating National Public Lands Day (NPLD) with free admission. “During previous National Public Lands Day volunteers throughout the United States have built trails, planted trees and plants, removed trash and invasive plants, as well as contribute to many other projects” commented Superintendent Walter J. Chavez.

San Juan NHS will hold it's 10th Annual Kite Festival on the historic grounds of Castillo San Felipe del Morro on Sunday February 16, 2014 from 11:00AM to 3:00PM.

Artisans in December at Castillo San Cristobal
San Juan National Historic Site Superintendent Walter J. Chavez announces the “Artisans in December” activity to be held in the park. For the second consecutive year Castillo San Cristobal will welcome a select group of local artisans to showcase and sell their art work. The Artisans in December program will be offered during the weekend of December 14-15, and will be available from 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Artisans will be displaying and selling crafts such as; wood carvings, musical instruments, glass, jewelry and will be providing demonstrations of their craft making. In addition, we will present the Lelolai show at Placita Norzagaray with the Areyto dancers and musical group on Saturday, December 14 at 4:30 pm. Lelolai performances will also be offered on January 6 and January 12, at Castillo San Cristobal. Please come and join us, “I encourage everyone to come and visit as well as enjoy the performance of Areyto at Castillo San Cristobal during this activity and enjoy what our local artisans have to offer” said Superintendent Walter J. Chavez. “It will also give our visitors a glimpse of the beautiful local crafts that Puerto Rico has to offer, and possibly consider purchasing an original Puerto Rican craft for a Christmas gift.” added Superintendent Chavez.

9th Annual Artisan’s Fair 2013
Superintendent Walter J. Chavez invites you to participate in our “9th Annual Artisan Fair at El Morro”. Come and enjoy a weekend with local artisans and celebrate our rich heritage in the arts on July 19 -21, 2013. Over 200 artisans have been invited to this wonderful activity, which promises to be the largest yet from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. We will have educational ranger talks, artisan’s demonstrations, typical food and music for your enjoyment.

SAN JUAN NHS 2012 PUBLIC LANDS DAY CELEBRATION
On Saturday, September 29, San Juan National Historic Site will celebrate National Public Lands Day (NPLD), a national volunteer event. Volunteers will work around the shoreline of Fort San Juan de la Cruz, also known as El Cañuelo in Isla de Cabras, Toa Baja, and help remove the litter that clutters the beauty of the historical fort and its surrounding waterfront.

Temporary Closure Notification
Superintendent Walter J. Chavez announces that Castillo San Cristóbal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro will be closed to the public effective at noon time, Wednesday, August 22, 2012. San Juan National Historic Site is taking precautionary visitor and personnel safety measures due to the forecasted hazardous rainy and windy conditions expected over the island. The fortifications will remain closed to the public until further notice.

8th ANNUAL ARTISAN FAIR AT CASTILLO SAN FELIPE DEL MORRO
San Juan National Historic Site will once again host an Artisan Fair on the grounds of El Morro. This year’s Artisan Fair de El Morro will be expanded to three days and will be held from Friday, July 20 through Sunday, July 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Over 150 artisans from the island are expected to participate in this year’s fair.

PRELUDE TO THE CASTILLO SAN FELIPE DEL MORRO ARTISAN FAIR
San Juan National Historic Site will again host an Artisan Fair on the grounds of El Morro from Friday, July 20 through Sunday, July 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Over 150 artisans from the island are expected to participate in this year’s fair. As a prelude to the Fair and to help promote the event, local artisans will provide demonstrations and sell their crafts in Castillo San Felipe del Morro every weekend beginning June 9th through July 15 th. These artisans will be featured from 9 am to 6 pm each Saturday and Sunday leading up to the fair.

The Discover Center, the heart of educational programming for children, is located just a few steps away from the historic entrance of Castillo San Cristobal on Calle Norzagaray, in what was originally a residence for US Army personnel in the 20th Century.

San Juan National Historic Site Superintendent Walter J. Chavez announces the grand premiere of "Misterio en El Morro" and "La Leyenda de la Garita del Diablo", two video books written and illustrated by a group of talented students from the Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Old San Juan. The free admission premiere will take place on Monday, April 18th, at 7:00 p.m. in the main plaza of Castillo San Cristóbal, with the students, their families and teachers, park staff and special invited guests present. The premiere will include a viewing of the two video books, along with recognizing the students for their outstanding work.

San Juan National Historic Site announces their annual spring clean up activity on the beach of Castillo San Cristobal. Volunteers are invited to participate in the beach clean-up which is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m... fifth Annual Kite Festival
Walter J. Chavez, Superintendent, San Juan National Historic Site, announced the 5th annual San Juan National Historic Site Kite Festival to be held on Saturday March 6th from 10 am to 4 PM. The festival is traditionally held on the grounds of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and is open to the public free of charge. “We are very pleased to hold this event for a 6th consecutive year. The Kite Festival provides an excellent opportunity for our visitors to participate in contests, educational talks, and of course kite flying, while educating them about the environmental issues relating to kite flying and maintaining the grounds of El Morro.

SAN JUAN NHS CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF PRESERVATION AND PROTECTION
San Juan National Historic Site will offer several programs and activities in commemoration of the parks 60th Anniversary on Saturday, February 14th, 2009. Entrance fees to the fortifications of Castillo San Cristobal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro will be waived on this day so that visitors can enjoy the fortifications and help the park commemorate this special occasion. San Juan National Historic Site was established as a Historic Site in 1949 and a World Heritage Site in 1983.

National Public Lands Day
Walter J. Chavez, Superintendent, San Juan National Historic Site announces the observance of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on Saturday, September 27th from 9am to 12pm at Paseo del Morro trail starting at the San Juan Gate. NPLD is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance America’s public lands. Last year over 100,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants. At San Juan NHS last year, approximately a 100 volunteers picked up over 4 tons of garbage from the area surrounding Fort San Juan de la Cruz (Cañuelo) in Isla De Cabras.
