1797 SAN JUAN ATTACK COMMEMORATION

Superintendent Walter J. Chavez invites the public to the San Juan National Historic Site third annual commemoration of the 1797 British Attack on San Juan which took place from 17 April - 2 May 1797. Local defenders forced the British troops, on their third and final attack to the island, to retreat after 13 days of battle.

 

The commemoration will take place on Friday, April 27 through Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the grounds of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal.Activities will include military drills, musket and artillery firing, the establishment of an encampment and educational programs.Local living history volunteers, or uniformed re-enactors, and others from the states and Europe will help to bring the past alive.

"This is a great opportunity for the public to learn about this significant historical event for Puerto Rico at the same time they celebrate National Park Week by enjoying free admission to Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal," said Superintendent Chavez.

 

San Juan National Historic Site is comprised of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, Fort San Juan de La Cruz (El Cañuelo), the San Juan Gate, and most of the City Wall. The site is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day, from 9:00AM to 6:00PM and until 7:00pm on Tuesdays when the Lelolai Festival is held in the main plaza of San Cristóbal.Admission to San Juan NHS is $3 for adults for one fortification and $5 for both; free for those 15 and under.
