Three lighthouses have stood on el Morro's fifth level in its long history. The first one was constructed in 1846. A second one replaced it in 1876. The second lighthouse took a direct hit during the 1898 bombardment of El Morro by Sampson's U.S. fleet, but the brick foundation was salvaged and reused in 1899-1906 to erect the lighthouse in use here today.

LEVEL VI - The uppermost level of El Morro was designed to protect against land attacks, and faces the city rather than the sea. The main fortress wall is protected by flanking cannon fire from the two half bastions, called 'Austria" and "Ochoa", on each end. On this level the El Morro lighthouse and World War II artillery observation posts were added by American military forces in this century.
