On Saturday, September 29, San Juan National Historic Site will celebrate National Public Lands Day (NPLD), a national volunteer event. Volunteers will work around the shoreline of Fort San Juan de la Cruz, also known as El Cañuelo in Isla de Cabras, Toa Baja, and help remove the litter that clutters the beauty of the historical fort and its surrounding waterfront. Volunteers are invited to discover Fort San Juan de la Cruz, the smallest of the fortifications which are part of the San Juan NHS and enjoy the view of Castillo San Felipe del Morro from the other side of the San Juan bay.

NPLD also supports the Presidential Let's Move Outside initiative and reminds the public that public lands offer a great option for getting active through hands-on fun activities. Participants can stay after volunteering to take advantage of the recreational opportunities available in Isla de Cabras, site managed  by la Compañia de Parques Nacionales, the Commonwealth agency responsible for local Commonwealth owned parks. After the event, participants may go swimming, kayaking, take a walk or bike ride, have a picnic, enjoy playing outdoors or simply relax with the natural environment.  Adult volunteers will receive a free admission coupon to Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal as part of the celebration.

National Public Lands Day is a perfect opportunity for families to experience what public lands have to offer and to give back to their communities at the same time they are outdoors as part of healthy, active living. "I'm calling all of you to lend a hand to the staff of the park and contribute to the enhancement and conservation of  your environment and cultural resources, as well as to having a fun packed day " said Superintendent Walter J. Chavez.

Those interested are asked to be at Fort San Juan de la Cruz in Isla de Cabras on September 29 at 8:30am for registration and instructions. Cleaning work will be done from 9:00am- 12:00pm. Volunteers are reminded  to wear appropriate clothing, hat and sun screen, as well as to bring water and snacks. For more information, please call 787/729-6777. San Juan National Historic Site is comprised of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, Fort San Juan de La Cruz (El Cañuelo), the San Juan Gate, Paseo del Morro and most of the City Wall. The fortifications are open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In addition, San Cristóbal is open until 7:00 pm on Tuesdays when special activities are held. Admission to San Juan NHS is $3.00 per fort for adults and free for ages 15 and under.
